We went and picked up the new (to us) camper today.  The sewer stuff is all new to me.

When we were doing the walk through the guy stated that you wait until the black water holding talk is full then you pull the handle to release it into the sewer drain your site.  Why even leave it in the holding tank?  Why can't I leave the handle open and evertime we use the potty it would go into the tank and then into the sewer drain?  :?

I have a gazillion questions for you folks when we get to Hanna.  I hope I don't drive you to crazy with all the questions.

Cindy is in heaven with this thing.  I liked the pup, but she had to have something that was alittle more like home.

The reason for waiting is two fold first of all the sewer system at the campground does not have a P-Trap so if you leave the tank open every time you flush you will get a whiff if you know what I mean. The other reason is that you will need quite a bit of water to move the contents along in the sewer line. If my black tank is not full when it comes time to dump I go ahead and fill it up.

Congratulations on the new camper I hope you and the Mrs make lots of happy camping memories with it.

Don't forget to change your profile it still shows a popup.

Greg

We leave our gray and black lines closed until it's time to dump. You don't want anything stacking up in the poopie tank turning into cement. Plenty of water is the key.

Congratulations on the new camper. We've had ours 2 years and we still have plenty of questions.

We look forward to meeting everyone at the Rally.

Thanks folks for the help.  That could have been nasty if we would have left it opened.  I have my profile changed....thanks Greg.

Be sure to use plenty of water.  Start with a tank that has enough water to cover the bottom, a couple of gallons will do.  The reason is to keep the solids suspended so they will flush out when the drain is opened.  If very little water is used, a virtual pyramid will form and before long, the gooey games will have to start in order to get the tank back to normal.  Many campers use a variety of chemicals to keep the smell at bay.  I clean my tank real good after returning home and add 2 cups of el-cheap-o laundry detergent and some Calgon water softener.  The mixture smells pretty good, no tank odor, and the mixture keeps the paper and goo from sticking to the inside of the tank.

Some suggest that they need chemicals to break down waste but usually, the waste is drained before any breakdown occurs.  The tank is a "holding" tank.

It is my version of the Geo Method.  Test it yourself.  By the cheapest detergent you can find.  Put a cup in a 5 gallon bucket with water.  Stir up the soap and water.  Now wash your hands in the solution.  Your hands will feel so slimy, nothing will stick.   There is no odor either.  I found out the secret to the odor problem is to wash out the tank with a hose after each outing.

Not sure how Bailiff does his ...but our RV has a flushout system on it that back flushes clean water back throught the tank after we dump it. Something the previous owners had installed and it works great we give our tank a really good cleaning/flushing after each trip also and have never had a odor problem.
We will have to try the soap thingy sometime to see how that works too!

Hey can anyone tell me about de-winterizing there rv??

Steve

I use a device bought at Walmart that attaches to the hose end.  It is about 50" long and has a spinning type brass fitting on the end.   This device is fed into the toilet and down into the tank.  The lower half of the device is flexible so it will go through some bends.  Once it is in the tank, I turn on the water valve and start at the bottom and come up and down in the tank.  The spinning high pressure on the other end usually cleans the tank out.  See the Picture

Some RV's come equipped with a hose connection on the tank that allows for flushing out the tank.

Baliff, thanks for the info.  I guess I will have to check and see if my tank has a hose connection on it.  If not I will be taking a trip to Wal-Mart.  I think I go to Wal-Mart 5-6 times a week.  Sometimes I just walk around.  I guess that is a sign that I am getting older.

Gosh I hope I get this job so we can go to Gold Head.  You guys are going to have fun and I want to be there:(.
