First, it was a long trip for us. I was exicted about going, and it was nice. But the reason I won't go back is the long trip and today (Wed) I just pulled three more ticks off me (we got back Sunday night!!!).
Ticks were alwful. I walked to the bath house and back and pulled three off me. I just hope the kids don't have any. My wife found a bunch in the laundry.
I'm going now to look up lime disease

| Ticks are a known problem in that area but can be present in any wooded area. Of course our know it all State Park system doesn't want to upset the ecological balance by treating the park for dangerous pests like ticks and mosquitos

| yea, I know. As much tromping through the woods I've done though, this is the first time I've gotten ticks. The yellow flys were bad but that doesn't bother me. Its the ticks that get me

I probably came across to negative on this thread. Don't know how to change the title.
Main reason I won't go back is the drive for us. It was long. Lots of just as good SP's closer. But I'm glad I went. I'm thinking now about upgrading to a motorhome.
If you go, use plenty of bug spray. The ticks were really, really bad.

Well you are certainly right about that. St Andrews may be my favorite. As far as springs campgrounds go there are better ones than Manatee.

| Are the ticks bad during fall and winter? I would like to go when the manatees are there.

Don't know if season matters. I looked up lyme disease and it sounds like the ticks that carry it aren't in this area. But they did say it didn't matter what time of year, the ticks were always active.
The camp ground was nice though. Dirt road through the sites but they were big and easy to get into. They evidently recently relaid out the camping sites. My only camp ground complaint is the breaker feeding the five sites which we were apart of kept tripping. I don't know why they have a 100 amp breaker feeding 5 30 amp sites
But when you consider its a campground with trails and a swimming hole, well, like I said I passed several on the way down there. So for that don't know if it was worth it for us. Took us 6 hours to get there. The manatees would have been neat to see. Don't know if they let you snorkel when their in there though. If so that would definitely be worth the trip.

Just an FYI.......when we went to Manatee SP last year we didn't get one tick......but that doesn't mean there weren't any. We even had our dogs there and none on them and take it from me a tick infestation is NO FUN we have been there with it getting spread to inside our home and it was awful!! Anyway I was very nervous about the lyme disease thing since 3/4 of our family has it already and it is not fun. We were told that although there have been a few cases that it is not wide spread in Florida like here in NJ (about half of everyone I know has it or there dogs have it) First thing we did was get our dogs vaccinated before we came here.....as a precaution I always check myself (hubby rechecks) and everyone that goes with us specially the kids since they seem to be a magnet for them) gets checked very well before we even start sitting on furniture or anything cause I don't want ticks anywhere near me!! Those and roaches have to be the nastiest bugs on earth !!! yuck!! If I do see a tick then we extra dose the deet bug sprays and shower in the bath house rather then the RV and everyone sticks to paths and away from bushes Obviously that is not always easy but as long as you check yourself/each other you should be fine the key is to get the ticks off before they attach them selfs...thats how they spread the disease

Ticks are a problem any time you camp ,,we have camped at many parks in Florida and never had a problem until went to Ft Clinch last year. After doing a check for the little pest when we got home I thought we were good,,three days later the little sucker showed on the back of my leg . They tend to be worse at certain times of the year. I read in another forum that they appear to be worse this year for some reason.Guess the D/W and I will have to do a more detailed seach on each other after camping,, ,,,,as the song says,,"I'd like to check you for ticks"

I kept thinking of that song while my wife was checking me for ticks. Also kept thinking "why couldn't it be you with the ticks"
I tell you one thing that was cool. The deer there are tame and will walk right through your campsite and eat anything you give them. Pretty neat.

| I am certainly happy to hear that us Kentucky campers are not the only ones that have to endure the misery of the TICK menace. The tick wouldn't be so bad if they were only larger, but those TINY deerticks are near impossible to see and the location of the bite itches for weeks afterwards. THEY ARE EVERYWHERE.....I share your pain...Marty

I hate ticks most of all I have a list of places that I don't like to camp for just that reason. I hate camping with a canopy of trees over head. Ticks like to climb up trees and jump down on us unsuspecting campers.

| I use deep woods off with great success but I don't use it on the kids due to the high deet content.
