I've been to Manatee at least 30-40 times and have camped there maybe 6 to 8 times and have never had a tick. It's only 30 minutes away for us and is a summer swimming spot. So it's kind of strange that you had such a problem. I hope they haven't infested the park.
Now Paynes Prairie is usually tick city. I do liberally use DEET spray.

just wanted to state again, my title was more negative than it should have been.
there were a lot of ticks, but thats somewhat to be expected. just be prepared.
it was a nice park and had a nice swimming hole. My main reason for not going back would be the drive.
