I finally broke down and got a Verizon Wireless air card for our laptop. We wanted to be able to to stay in touch while on our trip this summer. So far the thing is as good as advertised, very fast, very easy to install, and very portable.
Anyone had any experience with kind of wireless, and Verizon in particular?

Stan,
We have used the Verizon Air Card for the past 9 months. Over Christmas break, we traveled to Blairsville Ga (worked good there). Our son stayed online the entire trip without any interruption. We did experience some slow response at Salt Springs Campground, (no phone service) and Reed Bingham SP in Ga.
We will also put it to the test as we prepare to depart on the 12th of June to parts unknown, (as long as the money holds out) traveling north.
We have DSL at home and are considering removing the DSL in favor of the air card. The speed is about the same as our DSL so we see no advantage of keeping AT&T.

That is good stuff. We have never had any kind of service at Salt Springs.
We are going to get rid of Bell south all together when we return as well. Since we will have to get new e-mail addresses, I am looking at G-Mail and Yahoo for servers, any thoughts on this?
We are leaving Wed morning for Florida Caverns and parts west after that. Returning around 6th of July or so.

Stan,
Our plan is for unlimited usage. Stays on all the time. About $60 a month total. I plan on setting up a G-Mail or other type account.

Stan, I don't believe you could possibly use 50 GB. We use ours daily sometimes all day and night and for last month, we used less than 1 GB. Actually, 270,831 KB. G mail is easy to sign up for and easy to use. My son uses Firefox and swears by it as being faster along with G-mail and all Google has to offer.

Sorry I misspoke on the giabytes. It is a 5 GB plan. Right now the usage is showing a MB rate of 382 or so used. I don't know what a ki.libyte is? I thougt it would go from MB to GBs.

I know this thread is over a week old, but I just wanted to chime in. Baliff--be careful with the "Unlimited" plan from Verizon. They originally marketed it as such, but now is subject to a 5 GB/month cap. If you go over that limit, it gets costly very quickly. I use Sprint and was sold by their "Unlimited" plan, but have just learned that Sprint will be capping users at 5 GB/month as well. For most people that limit will not be a problem. I live in a rural area and the Sprint data card is my only option for internet, so I use it both on the road and at home. I rarely go over 3GB/month. Anyway, just wanted to give you a heads up that it really isn't "unlimited" and to just be conscious of that.
Stan--Just in case you care:
1024 KiloBytes(KB) = 1 MegaByte (MB)
1024 MegaBytes(MB) = 1 GigaByte (GB)

Thanks Kilo,
Just hit my first Gig after 2 weeks of pretty hard use, I am watching everything I do.
It is not like the old days with Bell south and Comcoast where you stream music all day long.

| Mine still shows on the bill and for the next 2 years, Unlimited. We went down to the Orange Park Verizon store last Saturday and we saw how they had changed the plans. Ours is safe for now.

Hey Baliff, are you using an air card, or are you connecting your laptop through your phone? If you have an air card, you would be the first person I've seen that has an "Unlimited" data plan. When Verizon first marketed it, they did so as "Unlimited*" (note the asterik), and had in the fine print that it was limited to 5 GB. Now they've been forced to advertise it differently even though it is still the same plan. It doesn't look like you will even come close to 5 Gigs anyway, so the point is probably moot. If you look at the website they list the 5 Gig plan with $.49 per MB for anything over that, which works out to $500 per GB for anything over 5 GB....a bit steep if you ask me

Says "Unlimited" on the bill. We have used it for days at a time.
In fact, we are on it right now at a campground outside Charlotte, NC.

I got curious as to how one could use 5 GB. In the mice type of the verozin site, they had this:
Typical Web Page lookup 150KB
(Based on this assumption, you would need to look up approximately 34,952 web pages in a month (or over one thousand per day) to reach 5 GB)
Have at it Stan....
