Lesa,

Dick's Sporting Goods advertised (in paper) a Garmin, Ventura HC GPS Bundle.  It contained a color Etrex, case, and topo software.  http://www.dickssportinggoods.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2776525&kw=2776525&sr=1&origkw=2776525

The ad also list a $30 rebate. Said total savings after rebate $130.00

That is very cheap. Would it be of any use? I would think at that price you couldn't expect much but maybe I am wrong. The Chinese seem to make everything cheap and occasionally they make something good.

Not sure on the Pepboys GPS (I didn't look at it). They had a large banner up above the door that was advertising it. If you never had one before it might work for you. Since I use mine mostly for camping, I always pick a campground (Suwanee River Music Park) that we go to just to see if the unit is up to date because I found that a lot of them won't have a deep vocabulary included.

I can only speak for the Garmin and the Magellan units, but I have found that the Garmin is easier to reload the new maps (April each year and free by the way) and custom waypoints.

No. But I have used my hand held (EL' Cheap O, $85 @ Walley World)

http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=6015179

to mark waypoints of my deer stands during hunting season and mark where the truck was parked when we ride our ATV's in the forest. For this application, it works good. I bought this same exact one at a local pawn shop for $60 and it does a great job. The one that I lost on vacation was just under $400 and my wife told me that I couldn't spend that much for a hand held (too easy to misplace).

I'm not sure if the one that I have in the truck will accept latitudes and longitudes (I just got it and really only use it for directions). I will have to get out the manual and see if it will. I know if I push the AAA icon, it will tell me the address, latitude & longitude, and compass reading of my location. I think it has more features on it than I will every use. I only bought this one for the camping feature....

I did check out the website that was stated in the other forum and I noticed that there is 3 geocaches located here in Callahan. Depending on the upcoming weather and me relocating the hand held (due to the recent move), I will try to see if I can find any of them.

This sounds pretty cool!

As of right now we are up to 43 finds in the geocaching game and at first I just typed in the cordinates and went to looking. As I got close to the cache and on the GPS screen the little triangle was right under me, but I was having trouble finding the cache. I have found that by doing this, it would get me within about 100 feet of the cache. If I right down the latitude and longitude on a piece of paper and switch the screen over to the navigator screen, then I would get within 3 feet. A big difference when looking for something very small.

Overall, it's fun to do!

This thread has fallen asleep it seems, but...

Wow, someone else has heard of Callahan, FL, and even lives there?  This tiny half-horse town where you can see the 'leaving' sign while standing at the 'entering' sign?  :)

Heh, gps's,  ooh boy what I can tell you about gps's,  right down to the frequencies and datastreams that come off the satellites and how the gps receivers triangulate and correlate all this data to give you a lat/lon result...   (I SAID I was a computer geek! :D) unfortunately what I know really doesnt apply to the handhelds though. (Well, it does, but not in the category of price or useability or which one is best...) I use car-mounted units and hockey pucks attached to laptops.   They are a bit larger than a handheld (the laptops that is, not the pucks) but every bit as functional!  I have four different pucks and a roughly $3000 topcon unit sitting on the desk next to me right now.  (the very same topcon that google uses to map their streets with, I'm told...)

The pucks are generally cheap too, especially the globalsat bu-353, i've seen it for about $40 or less even.  BUT it plugs into a computer via usb, so of course you need a computer of some sort.

I do own a handheld though, in the form of a T-Mobile 'G1' cellphone,  the one that runs 'google android' and is fully programmable.  It has a gps built into it and theres a fair number of freely downloadable geocaching softwares for it as well.  On its own it's not a cheap unit, but as an upgrade or replacement or new subscriber (with the obligatory two year contract of course)  I think it came to about $200.  And since I was changing phone companies anyway it worked out perfectly for me. :)

I have not yet done any geocaching myself, but I do have all that software for it installed! :bounce

Hey Ron and Amanda,

I just purchased the iphone and it has a geocaching application. I haven't purchased the application yet for $9.00. I thought I'd get it and try it out next weekend at Crooked River.

Hopefully it will work. It's worth a try.

Heh, I had meant to mention the iphone too because that is the only other cellphone at present that lets you access the gps unit built into it via programming.

I have a few friends who have the iphone, and while they dont use it for geocaching, they do tinker with the gps and it's reported to be pretty good.

As long as you can find a decent app on the iphone store, then it will work.  the gps chip inside the iphone (and the G1) is just as good as any over the counter gps unit you can buy, (Magellan, Trimble, Garmin, etc)

Do be warned though, having your GPS turned on all the time, will eat your phone's battery!

I'll bring my GPS to the rally too. I have been wanting to try it out on conjunction with my Blackberry. Geo Caching is a blast. I have found 60 or so so far. I always try to find at least one when we travel kinda to document our travels.
