Ok, so Comcast has crossed the line!!! They sent a letter saying all of our TVs will now need a 'box' if we want cable on them.  We can pay $5 per box for an HD signal or $2 per box for basic cable.  With 8 TVs in the house that's at least an extra $16 bucks per month.  Besides, where are we going to hide those ugly boxes??? And how many remotes does a family need?

Now Kev wants to take the cable out of MY dressing room!!!  This is out of control!!!!  How can I be expected to get ready for my days and evenings with 3 whole channels????

So, I throw the question out to my favorite campers whom I know are a very industrious group....  What are some options?  We have HD cable and of course high speed internet and need a signal for 8 TVs.

We switched to AT&T u-verse and love. Not to mention we're saving about $500 a year.

I have Comcast and Direct TV in my house.

The kids rooms and the master just have standard tv (Direct TV) and they have about 250+ channels each.

The game room has HD TV (Direct TV) and on my 50" plasma, it looks GREAT!!!! 250+ channels

The Living Room has HD DVR (Direct TV) and it too is on a 50" Plasma, GREAT Picture!!! 250+  channels. The living Room also has Comcast channels too. I had the Direct TV guy to pull me an extra cable to the TV when he hooked up the DVR service. So if for some reason the Satellite goes out, I can switch over to Comcast (BTW.....NO BOX for Comcast) and I get about 75+ channels. I have a Digital Samsung TV, so it will automatically pick up all kinds of channels.

The analog TV in the Garage is just running on Comcast and with no box it will pick up only about 25 channels.

I have Comcast for my high speed internet and when they installed it at the house, I made them put a splice connection in my garage. When he left, I installed a splitter and mounted it on the wall right underneath the Direct TV splitter.

When you have High Speed internet, they have to take off the filters, by doing this it opens the basic channels (about 25+).

Also, keep in mind that Direct TV is NOT CHEAP when you have several TV's. With 5 TV boxes, HD channels, HD-DVR service, Direct TV on Demand (which requires a internet connection), Caller ID on my TV when the phone rings, and 250+ channels runs around $140/month. Then when you add Comcast High Speed that's another $60/month.

With 8 TV's I would get to have the same setup as I have, it would be $15 more because you have to have 3 more boxes ($5/box)

What ever happen to the old fashion Rabbit Ears with the aluminum foil on them???

Just for the sake of discussion, from reading your outline if I canceled my comcast tv but keep the high speed internet I would still be able to pickup the basic digital tv.

If you are asking, I would have to say yes. If your TV has a digital tuner in it, you will pick up several channels (ours pickup around 75 or so) if your tv is the older analog then it will only pick up about 25 or so. Keep in mind that the analog picture is no where as clear as the digital ones.

I always wondered about that. We have what they call the family plan which is some what limited I think about about 40 channels. Mostly kid friendly programing. One day I was moving things around and just for kicks hooked up the tv with out the box and low and behold I picked up allot more channels. So I just left the box unplugged and deleted the channels I did not want from the tv's menu.

That's amazing.....

The thing that I have noticed on the digital broadcast channels, is they have several different versions of the same channel. Such as 12, 12.1, 12.2 12.3,.....etc.

I have a brother-in-law that works with Comcast and he told me that the bandwidth for 1 analog channel is about the same as 50 or more digital channels. Not sure how all that works, but hey that's the "New" technology that we are living in.

Yeah it was all good until they sent a letter saying they are going to require boxes.  Now we've got to come up with a new plan.  I wonder if we splice below the internet if our internet will slow down.  We've almost maxed out the router as it is.  We're normally on the internet x3 (2 laptops and an iTouch).   But the internet was/is on a dedicated line straight from the pole.  The other line coming in has been split 8 ways for TVs.  So..... I wonder...... hmmm.

Robert, rabit ears, really?  Nuff said.   :-)

I have wireless N1 connection in my house and with 3 computers, 2 ipods, the Xbox 360, and the Vonage box on it, the connection is still pretty good. Also I have the splitter before the router and this doesn't hinder the connection (at least I can't tell)
