A few weeks ago Owen and I went to the Jacksonville zoo with our playgroup.  Not sure when the last time was or if you've actualy have visited the zoo.  I'll just give you a description of the area where we were in.  We were in the Florida section of the zoo visiting the aligators.  The alligators are in a very nice deep pond surrounded by paved walkways on three of the sides of the pond.  each walkway has natural lush vegetation growing, which includes trees, bushes and low lying ground coverage.  Got the picture?

Ok, here's our story...

We visited the Florida bears and the owls and took the pathway leading to the alligators.  We stopped at the fake alligator to take photos of the children.  While taking the photos there was quite a commotion being made at the alligator pond from some guy about late 40s to early 50s and the 2 children accompanying him.  So naturally I look over in that direction to see what is going on.  The next thing I see this man do is walk over to the vegetation area, break a branch off a tree, walk back over to the alligators and start hitting the alligators with the branch.  Whelp that didn't go over well in my book.  So like a crazed pregnant woman I start shouting at the guy, "mister, mister... stop that your antagonizing the alligartors and are causing them stress, your aggrevating them and can cause them harm."  So this guy takes the branch away from the pond and starts arguing with me that he doesn't think he is harming them at all.  I told him he was and if he didn't stop I was going to make sure he was never going to be able to get into the zoo again and what a bad example he was to all the children around.  The guy through the branch into the vegetation area and stormed off with his kids.

So after he leaves another gentleman comes up to me and says that he was just about to say something to the guy, but I beat him to it.  Now granted this gentlemen was in charge of watching about 8 children, some field trip chaperone, but if you were going to say something then say something.

It bothers me that people are so intimidated by PC and hurting others feelings yadda, yadda instead of doing the "RIGHT" thing.  What is going on with setting a good example for our children?

What bothers me the most is that had this happened in the wild and one of the guy's 2 children or himself got attacked no one would have punished the humans, nooooo they would have shot the animal.

I would have damn tempted to grab his legs, give him a shoulder in the kidney, and give the Gators a chance to beat back on him.

Great job at straightening out a moron and letting his kids know what is appropriate and what is not. I'll give you my cell if you need help yelling at dummies again. It can be quite theraputic, right?

OK....(Ms. Knightfly here)

You are awesome!! You did EXACTLY what I would have done. I am sorry, but I can NOT keep my mouth shut in some situations, especially if I had seen anything like that!!! What  the kids are taught now, follow them into adult hood....I believe that is the reason there is so much killing and lack of respect for life as it is!! This is, what I believe, happened to the kids at the zoo in California. And, what was the end result? The tiger was killed......very, very sad.....Zoos are for the education of people and protection of animals, and for our enjoyment....

OK....off my soap box now....have a great day!

Mandy,

What play group are you in? My wife and TC are in a playgroup that went to the zoo just a couple weeks ago too.

Good job!  I think more people should speak up over blatant stupidity.  Anyone that can be cruel to an animal (wild or domesticated) is not someone I want to associate with and they are probably capable of unimmaginable acts.

You are right, what an example he is setting for the children in his care.  And fols wonder why people turn out the way they do, most of it starts with bad parenting.  Children are so vulnerable in their early years.  Good parents will have children that don't and will make poor decisions, the difference is these parents usually catch on and intervene before it's too late!

Hey Tom, I'm a part of the Little Lambs playgroup that is connected with Shepherd of The Woods Lutheran Church.  We have lots of non-members from the church in our group too!

Funny thing too before going to the zoo that day I was just talking to someone who told me that the last time they went to Jax Zoo some lady and her children were throwing french fries at the chimps.  Poor monkeys were begging and stressing for more food.  My friend spoke up and told the lady, "you know the monkeys do have special diets."

I tell you there are more and more idiots out there every day.
