We're searching for Taylor a small car , 4 dr and good on gas. Hoping to get her thru High School and College.
We've driven every small car out there. The selection has been narrowed down to 2 cars. Honda Civic and Hyundai Elantra. Honda isn't budging off the sticker price plus their warrenty is 3/36000 miles and Hyundai has a $1500 rebate and is 5/60,000 bumper to bumper and 10/100,000 miles on the drive train.
Have you owned either one of these cars and had any issues?

| I work for Nissan, and naturally would prefer a Nissan, but in this case, I would choose the Honda also.

I coaxed my daughter into buying a 2003 Hyundai Sonata. What a mistake that was. The car started to fall apart at 25,000 miles and the 100,000 mile warranty was worthless.
We looked at the Honda Civic for Rick when he was a Junior at Stanton. Honda had a good car but the price was wrong. We ended up buying a new Ford Focus in 2003. The car was used as a daily commuter from home to Stanton, 17 miles one way every day and now approaching 80,000 miles. It still seems to be fine. He still drives back and forth to Tampa several times a year to USF. We replaced the battery and a window regulator out of warranty. I understand Ford has increased there warranty to 5 years 60,000 on the power-train. They also have $1,500 rebate. Focus says 35 MPG.
Honda still best car but maybe not the best buy..

Richard,
Why was the warrenty worthless? We also looked at the Ford Focus. You're right about the Honda $$$ buy and they don't budge on the sticker price. We also looked at the Mazda 3. Any opinion on that one?
Joe,
I wish the Honda, at least had a better warrenty. Then it wouldn't be so bad paying the big $$$. Maybe I'll lease the car and when Steve's big F350 is payed for in 3 years return the lease and buy what she would want. The insurance on Taylor is about $2400 per year. YIKES

| I can't help with selection as I have not purchased a new car in over 11 years. To me proper maintenance is more important that brand. Instruct her how to properly care for the car it will last a very long time. Even my mothers Korean make Chevy Aveo is coming up on 100k with out incident.

Richard,
I'm glad you posted your information about the Hyundai. I was a little nervous about the purchase. It just didn't feel right. Something funny when I drove it.
After tomorrow, Taylor and her parents, will be a proud owner of a Honda Civic if all goes well.
Thanks for everyone's help.
Greg - we've covered car care with my Girl Scouts several weeks ago. They had to change a tire and we reviewed the importance of car care and routine maintenance. Great minds think alike. We stress the importance.
Now for the auto insurance. That will be the killer. By the time your girls are Taylor's age insurance will be more than the mortgage payment.
Hopefully this car will get her through college. Plus....I'd rather buy the car than give her the big Sweet 16 Birthday party, we'll have a little sweet 16 party. Her dad will be driving it to work and save on the diesel parking the truck. Hopefully we'll be saving some money there.

My daughter had an overheating problem that was repaired by Bill Terry Buick/Hyundai 2 years ago. About 2 weeks after the repair, it overheated again. Hyundai refused to repair it saying it was neglect. My daughter found this article which she said was a carbon copy of her deal. By the way, Bill terry was going out of business. http://www.my3cents.com/showReview.cgi?id=14360
I had kinda pushed her to buy this car (I financed it) because of the "Great Warranty" . If Bill Terry hadn't gone out of business, I may have been able to get it repaired. The new Hyundai of OP looks like it is run by the "Italian Mafia" the way they treat owners "take him for a ride".
As for Insurance, Rick's insurance started out at $900 every 3 months. With his grades and getting older, his rates have dropped to about $600 every 3 months. Boys you know...

Richard,
WOW, your daughter deserves to be angry. What a mess. I'm glad we are going with the Honda Civic. It's a little more money but not much. I think we're getting a pretty good deal at Lucas Honda. We went around to other Honda dealers and they are all adding a "dealer prep" at the tune of $1500 to $2000. This sale was available until today. So if anyone wants a good price on a Honda Civic today is the day. Tell them Lesa sent you. LOL
Thanks for everyone's help.

We have a 1995 Honda Civic hatchback. Bought it used at around 60k and it now has 170k on it. Mark just recently replaced the clutch wheel. Hondas are awesome cars. Just remember to always replace your timing belts!!! Oh and if you keep the car as long as we have you will have to replace the CV joints a couple of times.
Get Steven to teach Taylor to do an oil change.
