Geocaching (pronounced geo-cashing) is a worldwide game of hiding and seeking treasure. A geocacher can place a geocache in the world, pinpoint its location using GPS technology and then share the geocache's existence and location online. Anyone with a GPS unit can then try to locate the geocache.
Have you ever geocached and if so what kind of GPS do you own and what would you suggest as a starter GPS?
Help some of us newbie's get started. Maybe we can plan some geocaching at a campout.
Looking for your input.

Lesa,
Untill now, I haven't given it much thought. I plan to read and see what is the best unit for the money. I am sure a unit that can be used for other navigation besides geocaching will prove to be the best buy.
I will be on the sidelines waiting the coaches input.

Lesa, I have never done it but my daughter loves it. I just talked to her about it and she gave me this web site to go to learn about it. I went ahead and set up my account while I was there. After you set up a account you can get the directions to the Cache. I guess I will go but a GPS soon. It look like a lot of family fun.

We'll have to learn this one together. I've just started researching which devise would be the best bang for the buck. I told Greg, Steven would want me to get a Pinto but I can't stop myself from getting the Caddy.
Geocaching has always interested me and now I'll have buddies to check it out with me.
Please share with us what information you find and any good buys on GPS's.
Cookie ~ thanks for sharing the information. We'll have to pick your daughter's brain for information.
Thanks,
Lesa

I am cheap so I want the pinto if at all possible but like Richard said I also want he best bang for my buck. There are so many units out there that I have never been able to make up my mind. Any help in chosing a hand held model that will be great for geocacheing as well as getting around town would be greatly appreciated.
Greg

Bailif wrote ~ The Garmin 60 CSx seems to get better reviews than Garmin's new Colorado or Oregon models. All the above models seem to be too expensive for me unless ebay has a deal. The GPS Store has the 60CSx at $329.95. I have bought almost all my GPS units from them. They seem to have a lower price than other sites.

I will continue to look.
I found some factory refurbished ones on ebay for as little as $269.00 w/free shipping. One year Factory warranty.
Thanks for the info Bailiff. I looked on Bestbuy to read the reviews on this GPS and all the reviews were positive.
I wonder if it's an exclusion at Sports Authority when they have their coupons. Hummm. I'll check.

I think I failed to mention that Steven said I could get buy with just getting a sextant, that way we wouldn't have to worry about batteries.
I said ha ha ha. Dust of the cobwebs in your wallet.

I just found out there is a geocache to be located in the Stephen Foster SP. Hummmm......I wonder if we can find it.
Does anyone have a GPS? This could be fun. Maybe we can even develope a Geocache of our own. Start something new.
Some geocaches have a tupperware type container and you sign in that you found it and write a little something for others to read coming up behind you. Others have little treasures and you take something and leave something behind for the next person to find.
Sounds like we could have some fun. Here are the coordinates:
N 30° 20.001 W 082° 46.040
N 30° 19.997 W 082° 45.679

| Lesa have you picked out a GPS yet. The choices and some of the prices are staggering. Still trying to make sense of it all. Annice hasn't said I can get it yet but that never stopped me. I liked Steve's sextant idea but I can never figure out which star you are supposed to line up on.

Harley88 ~ will a plastic sextant work?
Al ~ I'm still looking at the Garmin 60 Csx. I'm hoping Sports Authority will put out a coupon for 25% or so off and not list it as an exclusion.
I'm still looking for a good price break.
