We are planning a summer vacation for the last week of June to the first week of July and our destination will be in Virginia. Not sure where we are planning to camp, but looking some where in the mountains as we want to do some white water rafting while we are there.

Has anyone camped in the mountains of Virginia? I am looking for some reviews, suggestions, and things to do or see.

Thanks!

New River Gorge that is all most on the line of Va and west Va.Is know for white water rafting.further south is any where along High way 460.I don`t know about the parks for camping as I lived up there for nine years at Smith Mountain Lake so was with in a day trip from home.I know where the New River gos from Va. To West Va there were some class five rapids. They had quite a few to drown there and was advertised for only the very experienced rafters.
It has been ten years since I lived there so that is all I can think of.

We had some friends to do the white water rafting thing and they loved it, so we are going to try it too. However, class III is about as far as we are going to go. When we go on vacation, we like to visit the National Parks and we have our eyes set on Shenandoah National Park, so we are looking for something close to it.

Richard you can't go wrong visiting the Shenandoah National Park. Given that I lived at the base of the mountain I have spent allot of time hiking the trails and using the day use areas. In my opinion the best place to camp in the park is Big Meadows campground. There are some amenities nearby such as the Big Meadows lodge where you can have dinner, there is a small activities center which gives you allot of information about the park and how it was built. We have seen bears and deer wondering through the campground while staying there. One of my favorite trails is also very near the campground. White Oak Canyon Falls I used to hike this trail monthly starting at the base of the mountain and hiking up to the lodge and them back. http://www.hikingupward.com/SNP/WhiteOak/

There is a very nice campground in Madison Va. http://www.shenandoahhills.com that you could use as a base of operations if you wanted to explore other areas of the state. This campground gives you a central location that puts you with driving distance to some of the best that Virginia has to offer. There are three presidents homes within easy driving distance. I would recommend vising all three of them.

Monticello: http://www.monticello.org/

Montpelier: http://www.montpelier.org/

Ash Lawn-Highland:http://www.ashlawnhighland.org/

You would be able to explore the national park and still only be two hours away from the Northern Va area where you could visit many national historical sites such as Mayfield Civil War Fort, Manassas Museum and I would recommend a day trip to Mount Vernon to visit George Washington's home this place is amazing. http://www.mountvernon.org

There are also several winemakers in the area that give tours and wine tastings so that you can fill up that wine rack you were talking about.

I really enjoyed living in central Va because of all of the place listed above and I have only scratched the surface of the things you can do and see there. If only it didn't snow in the winter. :(

We stayed at Fairystone State Park near Stuart,VA. Beautiful place on a lake. Swimming, canoeing/kayaking, fishing, and nice hiking trails. Big wooded sites with water and elec.
When we left, we drove back on the Blue Ridge Parkway, which isn't far away.
