This a tale of two different campgrounds in one. The beach side (our favorite) is very open with no shade so bring your own. All of the sites here are sandy and mostly level. Water and 30 am only. There is a dumb station as you leave the camping area. There is a boardwalk that takes you from the camping area to the beach. Our girls love this beach for the amount of sea shells they find there. But you better get up early as it does not take long for the best ones to get picked up. The bathhouse here is clean but dated. There are a lot of trails in the park and even a guided trail on Saturday morning (check he schedual at check in).
The riverside is much different in that there is no sun. A thick canopy of trees projects overhead to keep you cool on those hot summer days. The bathhouse here is very nice and new. Some of the sites have a view of the river. The river is just a short walk to the river from all the camp sites.
Don't forget to tour the Fort while you are there. They often have solders at the fort during the weekend.

Cathean,
Mark and I have never camped there, but we have visited the place a couple of times. The CG has two camping sides. The beach side and the woods/creek side. There are plenty of tent sites to choose from. You may want to visit FL state park website for more details. Or if you're up for an adventure the place is only 30-45 minutes from Jax so you could actually scope it out before you decide to camp there.
Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Mandy

They do not allow tents on the beach side. I am not sure why not perhaps Phil knows he has a relative that works there. They do allow tents on the river side and lots of people do camp there in tents. In fact we will have one member camping there in a tent in Sept.

| Thanks. We were thinking of driving out one weekend to check it out. I would prefer not to be in the woods but don't mind a few trees. I've never camped near the beach anywhere so I was hoping this would be an adventure.

| Cathy, I sure hope you will come out to join us on this one. Crossing my pinky toes for you to find a not so woodsy spot.

Hi Guys,
I'm looking at reserving a spot at the Fort Clinch, and don't know what area to pick. I'm confused!
I have a tent that we're going to be camping in. Do you know if each of the campsites are close enough to walk to, or ride bikes to? What areas are you all staying in (that accepts tents?)

Morning Shannon.
You will need to camp in the Riverside Camping Area. It looks like campsites 22-62 are for tenting. Phil may have the best idea which site to pick as he has tented there before.
Most of us will be staying on the beachside. I know there are a couple of people camping on the Riverside. Take a look at our calendar and it will tell you exactly who will be camping at which site #s.
It's pretty easy getting around there with bicycles.
Hope this helps~Mandy

Mandy is correct you need to get a site on the river side any site is ok for tents. We love to ride our bikes at Ft Clinch and yes you can ride from the river side to the beach side. Our girls 7 and 8 do it all the time. So go ahead and make a reservation we would love to have you.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to seeing this campground. It sounds like there will be a lot to do and see. I'll reserve a campsite this weekend. Anyone recommend a certain one? I saw where two people are camping in 36 and 37. I was wondering about 35, 58, or 46. I just don't want to be right next to a stinky garbage can. LOL.
I will probably be leaving from work early on Friday, but getting there late. Another quick question for you guys. What happens when you get there, say 8 or 9 the latest? Do they lock the gates where you can't get in?
We had an experience when we went to St. George Island state park once to camp. It took us a little longer than we expected and arrived around 9:30. This was the first time we went to the park and of course found the gates were locked. You needed a code to enter, but luckily, a very nice man was able to let us in and we knew our campsite number, got settled, and was able to talk to the desk in the morning. I was very amazed at how easily we could put up our tents in the dark!Last edited on Fri Aug 10th, 2007 04:14 am by Shannon

Shannon the only sites to avoid are 61 and 62 they are right across from the dump station and it was gross being that close when someone used it. STINKY!!
They do lock the gates at 8:00 but use a code that we will make sure you have.

We didn't notice a problem with smell at #61.
Only time we had a problem was when the old guy dumped on the ground, that
lasted thru out the day Sunday.
