Well here we are and what peace and quiet. This trip to Fort McAllister has been quit enjoyable to say the least. Upon checking in, we met Flattire, Joe and Dana, and on Saturday afternoon met Tom, Christie and little TC.
Things moved real fast Saturday as we went to the fort, Joe and Dana went fishing and Tom and Christie were also occupied. Saturday afternoon we went into Savannah to Fort Pulaski. We visited there until closing time destroying our chance for a pot luck and by the time we got back to the Campground, it was too late to fix anything. I want to apologize for this lack of planning on my part. We caught a snack then sat around the campfire with Joe and Dana until about 9:30.
Back to the review. The campground was full all weekend. They are constructing a new bath house between the first and second loop. The old one was still kept clean by the Volunteers. Flattire was in site 6 and we were in site 7. Tom and Christie were in 48. The weather so far has been real nice but the Gnats have had a field day. Up until about 10 am in the morning and between 4 pm and dark they ate real good. After dark, they vanished. The loop roads inside the campground are pretty much in good shape, few potholes, but the tree invasion has reduced the clearance somewhat making maneuvering a big trailer eye opening. This is a good bicycle park because of the large paved loops and the campground approach road from the Museum. It is better to arrive here before dark to be able to see the sites and obstructions. The fort is a earthend type that was never destroyed during battle. Henry Ford purchased the property in the 1930's and restored the fort. Some of the earthen tunnels are open, one being an underground bunkhouse.
