We went here in May, and we loved the beach, but the mosquitos  on the camping area were absolutely terrible.  The campground was located off the beach on the other side of the island.  It was clean and had many high pine trees as coverage.  It was probably about a 15 minute walk to the beach (We drove with all our junk) and the beach was worth it!  The bathrooms were clean, and the beaches and water were beautiful.  The staff was also very helpful with telling us the going-ons in the area.  Big note!  There is a code to get in after hours, so if you are late showing up to the campsite, make sure to call!

Just bring plenty o bug spray ;)  I'm surprised when the breeze kicks up that the bugs aren't blown away....is it close enough (camp area to get the breeze from ocean or much more closed in with trees so the breeze doesn't get to you?)

Yeah, it's closed in.  There is a huge wall of sand blocking the campground from the gulf and the campground is about a 15-20 minute walk away from the beaches. There are also many pine trees everywhere. On the beaches there weren't any mosquitos, just on the campground side.  I wish I would have taken some pictures of the campsite, but we weren't there much.  Spend most of our time at the beach until dark and only spent one full day there.

Actually the picture of my tent that's located by my name on the left side of this post is from this park, so you can see the trees around the tent.
