James Island County Park is operated by Charleston County and is a premier destination park for visiting Charleston. It is located just south of the city and an easy drive in. This is a large park with many activities. Reservation are a must. Cost was $33 a night for full hook up.

It has 125 campsites with full hookups including some pull through sites. It also has 10 cottages available. Located within the park are miles of nature trails and paved bike paths. Stays are limited to 28 days in a 30 day period. The literature states that no alcohol is allowed. The park has a very large developed playground, a water playground they call the spray zone and a small but full water park (additional fee). They also have fresh and salt water fishing, an off leash dog play/swimming area, and shuttle service (fee) to the Charleston visitor center.

This is a first class county park that may not have an equal. I have a list of preferred campsites for those interested. Not all sites are created equal as I can attest to firsthand. (I had the worst spot in the place). For visiting the Charleston area it would be hard to find a better spot. Charleston offers the history buff many opportunities as well as the general tourist. From revolutionary times through the Ante bellum period and beyond. There are many preserved plantations and the city’s historic district is huge with many buildings and streets pre-dating the American Revolution including a few cobblestone streets still in existence. The Ft Sumter national monument is located in Charleston Harbor and they also have an area called Patriots Point where the aircraft carrier Yorktown and several smaller ships are available for touring. Dining opportunities abound, I ate some very good seafood during my stay.  I have included a link to the homepage

Fla-gypsy,

Is this the CG that does all the cool Christmas decorations?

Sounds like you had a great time.  We'll be checking with you about the good sites. :D

Yes, they do a tremendous holiday decorating deal with about 2.5 million lights. I have not seen it but have been told that it is spectacular.

Seems crazy doesn't it to have to talk about 2010 this far out but I understand you have to be ready the day it becomes available to get a spot during this time. I hate to admit it but I just made my spring break 2009 reservation at Hunting Island State Park in South Carolina, beach front site!. I tried to get in Gamble Rogers SP in Flagler and it is so booked up i just gave up.

Fla-Gypsy,

Have you been to Hunting Island SP before? How are the sites. Would we be ok there with our rig?

First time for me but RA says my site is 45' long, I am trusting they are right. Lesa we picked this park because it is close to Beaufort and we want to tour the town. Have heard it is a charming place and lots of good seafood(do you see a trend here yet).
