Looks like a nice place to visit.  Is anyone opposed to traveling to Georgia for camping?

"During the Civil War, the site was called Camp Lawton and served as “the world’s largest prison.” Today, little remains of the prison stockade; however, the earthen breastworks which guarded it may still be seen. "

We would go as long as it is not too far...for a weekend if I don't get off till 5pm we wouldn't make it till 10-11 pm or later unless its within 3-4 hours it is a little far for just friday and sat for us...but if we know in advance we could always get an extra day like monday or friday off....so we could leave the night before

If you want to go to Georgia, I suggest Georgia Veterans near Cordele off I-75.  Georgia Veterans has a train station where you can board the Sams Short Line Railroad.  http://samshortline.com/  Catch the train and ride west to Americus, then Plains, then on to Archery, the historic preserved site of President Jimmy Carter.  This is an all day trip which is real fun.  We got off in Americus then Plains where we followed the train staff to a small restaurant to eat lunch.  We then had time to go the General Store and get some Peanut Butter Ice cream.  Boarded the train again and rode to Archery and visited Carters Farm and home.

Also, not far away is Andersonville Georgia.  The Notorious Civil War Prison where the South crammed 45,000 captured Union troops into about 20 acres.  The site is also home to the Andersonville National Cemetery and National Museum of the P.O.W.  This trip should be a minimum of 3 days or more to see both places.  I do suggest we take some time in the future to visit this park and the history around it.

Phil,

If your asking about Georgia Veterans, there are two campgrounds across the road from each other.  One is located on a lake as in the attached picture.  The other, across the road is laid out around a center bath house in a mature very tall pine forest.  All the sites we saw in the pine forest area were very large pull through type.  The lake area sites were a little closer together but well open.  We really enjoyed this trip in the winter of 2004.

Georgia Veterans is a massive place with a static on site War Museum with some real left over war equipment including B-29 bomber.  The park has a model air plane flying field and a huge lodge and golf course.  It is located 11 miles west of Cordele Georgia.
