I meant to include this in my previous post and forgot. About 30 years ago I spent 13000 miles in a vw bus converted to a camper travelling the country, mainly the west after going up to virginnia and doing the Shenandoah and Blue Ridge parkway and GSMP. No way could I afford it today having to still work for a living. Once in a lifetime trip for me and glad I did it then.

Jim, you sound like my hippie parents traveling around in a VW bus. As I recall we went through a couple of VW camping Vans when I was little.

We did a 3,100 mile trip in 2006, and we averaged 10 miles per gallon. Diesel is now .90 cents a gallon more than 2006. Simple math equates to a $270.00 increase in our fuel cost.
I for one believe that the time is now to travel because fuel is not coming down. Look for it to reach European level (today $7.67 per gal vs. US $3.35) in 5 years or less. Besides, I am not getting any younger and there is so much to see.

| Jim, I would love to be able to pack up and just go for a month or so. I think a lot of people are going to be taking shorter trips and figuring out some creative solutions to get their gas money for trips. Bailiff, I imagine we'll be seeing more European style RVs being manufactured here also. Some of them are pretty cool. I would love to have one of those European caravans and get some great gas mileage and still be able to squeeze a family of four in it.

In October we will be at Lake Hartwell SRA near Fair Play. Our last trip we stayed down at Calhoun Falls. Love this area for camping and ease of getting therre from NE Florida.

I am planning a trip from Florida up through New Hampshire and Maine. Leaving around the end of March and returning sometime around November .

We did a long trip last year. We started out in Jacksonville and made it all the way to Yellowstone National Park. We had the trip planned to a tee on the way out there and shot from the hip on the way back. After 7000 miles traveling 22 days through 24 states, my wife said we can't do another big trip like that until we get a larger truck. The ole' Ram just doesn't have the back seat area. We average 15.6 MPG on the whole trip and that was even climbing 8% grades several times for several miles.
We have a trip planned for Washington D.C. this spring via Camp Hatteras, Kitty Hawk, Cheasepeake Bay, Washington D.C., Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Flight 93 Crash Site, and the Blue Ridge Moutains. If we close on our new home this Month, we may cancel this trip until the Summer.
Vacation Comparisons.....
in 2005 we took a week long cruise from Miami, to Nassau, to San Jaun, to the Virgin Islands, and Back. for the family of 5 and it cost over $6000
in 2007 we went a Yellowstone Vacation for 22 days, dragged our 2nd home around with us, Saw more than we ever thought we could, fuel, camping, $5300 and that also including in flying my older son to Cody, Wyoming to join us.
Yes! we will take another trip in the future!!!Last edited on Mon Mar 3rd, 2008 11:33 pm by zigzag3337

As a former truck driver who spent as much time out west as my dispatcher would let me, I can tell you a route for a west trip that is a 12 out of 10.
Head up to B'ham and go out I-20 to Dallas. Then 287 to Amarillo. Go west on I-40 to US 93 through Henderson to Vegas. Then up I-15 through Virgin River Canyon (most beautiful stretch of interstate in the US). Then, head up to I-90 to head back east. Drop down along the Mississippi River to I-40 and head east. Get to I-26 and go east to I-95. Then just put it on cruise and get back to the house.
That route will let you see parts of America from each end of the spectrum. Things you couldn't imagine we had; Red Rock canyons, green rivers, snow in the summer, best sunsets EVER....
I am trying to plan that trip myself. The good thing about it is that you can just enjoy the drive and do it in 3 weeks or so, or there is enough to do that you could stay out 4-6 months if you wanted. I hope you guys will one day get the pleasure of going out west for an extended amount of time. It really is awe-inspiring when the landscape gives you a little perspective, and you realize how small we really are.
