My son is a big fan of "Cash & Treasures" on the Travel Channel. He is really into making that our summer trip. I heard there are a few places to gem mine and pan for gold in north Georgia. Has anyone done this? I heard that Unicoi State Park in Georgia is nice and that some mining areas are close by.
I would like to limit our trip to Georgia, gas prices being what they are and probably $4 per gallon by the summer. I would love to hear any suggestions for a gem hunting area. Thanks!

Unicoi is a nice park. It has two campgrounds and a few are available with sewer hook-up. We stayed there last summer for 10 days unable to fit in Vogel or Black Rock Mountain which beat Unicoi hands down. Unicoi's two campgrounds are located in ravines so there is no breeze but they have a great AYCE trout buffet at the lodge. Helen is like a street side Target/Walmart with fake alpine themes. Mostly high priced crafts imported of course and very dirty (trash/paper and sand blowing). Tubing is available if the water is up.
Moccasin Creek SP is between Blairsville and Dillard. Great trout fishing and a beautiful campground. The Dillard House is always on my list if I am within 50 miles. Last time, the lunch was $16.95 but man was it good.
Amicalola Falls is also a great spot however the climb into the campground is a little steep. It would be the shortest drive to the gold mines in Dahlonega.
Dahlonega is the gold capitol of Georgia with the Gold Museum downtown and several attractions to pan for gold and gems. Sorry, no state parks real close.

Hello TracyD,
I'm going to Crater of Diamonds in Arkansas for a day or two while in Louisiana for spring break. We will be mining/panning for diamonds and gems. We saw this park on "Cash & Treasures" also. Have you checked out the website for "Cash & Treasures." They list a lot of cool info on there. PM me if you are interested in doing a Treasure trip together with the kids.

| I'm planning to take the girls to an emarald mine we saw on "cash and treasures". It's somewhere in North Carolina. I thought we were the only ones that got hooked on that show. LOL.
